Selective Media

• Media that prevents some bacteria growth.

EX: Mannitol Salt Agar (only bacteria that can survive high salt can grow MSA)
Differential Media

• Media that lets you see whether bacteria can eat different things
• EX:DNase agar ( if bacteria can break down DNA. The agar changes from blue green to clear where the bacteria are)

Kirby-Bauer Test for Antibiotic- R
1. Suspend ~1 small colony of unknown bacteria in 1 mL of sterile broth
2. Make "lawn" of bacteria by swabbing broth and bacteria on Mueller Hinton (MH) plate
3. Place 3 antibiotic disks per plate ( have one -ctl disk)
